Paris, Quartier Latin

There are still quite a few beloved arthouse cinemas in Paris where they show independent, thoughtful films. And this summer I’ve spent a lot of time at Le Champo, a Parisian institution and a registered historical monument.

Le Champo is a small, no-frills, two-screen movie theater in the Latin Quarter, near La Sorbonne. In the 60s and 70s it was the hangout for the major filmmakers of the Nouvelle Vague (Chabrol, Truffaut, Agnès Varda).

This month they’re featuring a retrospective of films from the 1950s by the Japanese filmmaker, Kenji Misoguchi. His most famous film is called "Ugetsu" in English. Which is amusing because in French it’s called "Les Contes de la lune vague après la pluie".
