I first heard of the dish, ochazuke in the summer of 2018 when I fell in love with the Japanese filmmaker, Yasujiro Ozu (1903-1963).
One of Ozu's films is called The Flavor of Green Tea over Rice. It's about an arranged (and somewhat disappointing) marriage. The wife thinks her husband is dull. But the husband prefers the simple pleasures of life, including ochazuke (a simple dish of pickles and other toppings served on rice with green tea poured over it).
I figured that I would probably never get a chance to try ochazuke because comfort food is rarely served in restaurants. So imagine my surprise when I discovered a Japanese tea room in Paris with ochazuke on the menu!
P.S. Ozu's film has a happy end. The wife realizes that the dull husband is not so bad after all.
