Au Bon Maréchal was a blacksmith's in the late nineteenth century. Since 1940 it's been a private home, and in recent years a Bed and Breakfast. Owned by the same family for five generations.

Between 1887 and 1914 this studio was used by Monet, Cézanne, Rodin, Sisley, Mary Cassat and most of the American artists who visited or lived in Giverny.

Claude Monet, 1840-1926

Claude Monet married Camille Doncieux in 1870. They had two children, Jean and Michel. Neither of Monet's sons had children.
Monet's second marriage was to Alice Hoschedé in 1892. She had six children from her marriage to Ernest Hoschedé.
Monet's son, Jean, married Alice's daughter, Blanche Hoschedé. After Monet's death, Blanche kept up the house and the garden with the help of the head gardener. After Blanche died in 1947, the property fell into ruin.
In 1977 Gérald Van der Kemp was entrusted with restoring the property. He and his wife, Florence, appealed to American benefactors. Donations were forthcoming and allowed the house and garden to be restored.
La Fondation Claude Monet opened in 1980.
