I went to visit my family in Johnstown, PA and decided to stay on a farm! It turned out to be one of my top 5 "best travel experiences" ever!

The barn burned down in 2020. To rebuild it, the Amish came for a traditional Amish barn raising.

They were baling hay while we were there.

Our host, Bill, drove us around Amish country in Somerset County on two different days. The second time his wife, Jeanette, came along too. That afternoon we spent a couple of hours in the home of an Amish man that Bill knew. He very kindly answered all of our questions about the Amish community. Out of respect I didn't take photographs there.
Moo Echo Dairy is a conservative Mennonite grocery store and lunch place where we stopped for lunch on both days. The girls working behind the counter were not yet married. Once married they do not work outside the home.

This is a little Amish dairy store. No one is there. You take what you want, put money in a little box and leave a note.
The Amish do not have phones in their homes. But some do have them in small sheds far enough away from the house so as not to hear the phone ringing from inside the home.
Goodbye to the farm
