Liverpool, 3rd trip - Better and better!

Day 1 - Iron Men

At the top of my list of things to see was the Iron Men on Crosby Beach. It's an installation called "Another Place" by British sculptor, Antony Gormley.

Gormley made 100 casts of his own body and all of the figures are looking out to sea.

It was a rainy and very windy day... the kind of weather that really suited the sculptures!

I also got to see two places where the Beatles played outside of town. Not as well-known as the Cavern but important venues in Beatles history.

Litherland Town Hall

Lathom Hall

Also outside of town, I saw the wall paintings of John and the Beatles. These are kept up by the local council and Liverpool street artist, Paul Curtis.

Day 2 - "And nothing to get hung about..."

John's childhood home is on Menlove Avenue

John was not yet 18 when his mother, Julia, was killed by a car as she was crossing the road to get to this bus stop. I took the bus safely back to town.

And then I sat on the bench with Eleanor Rigby for a while.

Day 3 - The Quarrymen

In the morning I stopped in at the Museum of Liverpool to see a mini-exhibition of 15 photographs called "Beyond the Beat".

In the evening, I went to a concert of "The Quarrymen and friends" at John Lennon's old school. The Quarrymen were John's first group... a bunch of kids from school and the neighborhood who started out playing skiffle (which is similar to jug band music in the States). The original band had 2 guitars, banjo, drums, tea-chest bass and washboard. Then John met Paul (67 years ago on this date) and the rest is history.

Day 4 - Happy Birthday Ringo!

In the morning I wandered along the waterfront before going to Ringo's birthday event.

At noon a group of people gathered at The Beatles Story museum where we were filmed shouting out "Peace & Love" and "Happy Birthday Ringo"! This happens every year in numerous cities around the world and all of the videos appear on Ringo's Facebook page!

In the afternoon, I stopped in to say hello to the Bombed Out Church. And I was just in time for a concert by a charming community choir. They were upbeat, the director was fun and the sun came out! A lovely end to my stay in Liverpool.
